about

Limited Edition 180gm vinyl

Any-Angled Light is a suite of instrumental music featuring bass, guitar, piano, tenor saxophone, electronic synthesis, and field recordings. Mixing song-structures with open-ended ambient compositions, melodies with sound-collage, the seven individual tracks invoke a range of genres while a breadcrumb trail of sounds and motifs scattered throughout the album builds a sense of continuity, suggesting a sonic reckoning with the natural world.

Recorded by visual artists and musicians in Montreal, Toronto, and rural Ontario, these songs were constructed in a call-and-response fashion with audio sketches, drawings, photographs, text, and video sent back and forth between the players - a conversational process that began during the winter of 2020 and continued off and on over the next 2 years.

Any-Angled Light is

Jennifer Dorner (piano) lives in Montreal where she engages with the world's challenges through art, finding solace in piano, intervening in local politics with puppet shows, and in running an art museum.

Alex Geddie (electronic synthesis) lives in Toronto and has been composing and performing computer and electronic music since 1997, both solo and as a member of Fleischmop.

Mike Glendon (tenor saxophone) lives in Toronto and is a graduate of the Humber College Jazz Performance program. Mike has been performing and recording music for 20 years.

Kamryn McFarlane (electronic synthesis) lives in rural Ontario. Her sonic and sculptural works explore subtle geological processes, cyclical weather patterns, the fluctuation of currents and mechanical pulses. She is interested in how one interacts within specific acoustic ecologies and attempts to provide different ways of listening to eco-acoustic cues while navigating our changing environmental landscape.

David Poolman (bass, field recordings, MIDI instruments) lives in Toronto and teaches drawing and sound at Sheridan College. Since 2017 he has collaborated with Jeremy Drummond to produce work as Never Met A Stranger, a collaborative platform for the production of art and experimental media, a publisher of vernacular arts and culture, and an online archive of field recordings, interviews, and documentary resources.

Mike Vass (guitar) is a filmmaker based in Montreal. He is the co-writer and producer of the award-winning 2020 documentary Cane Fire (which features an original score by experimental guitar icon Mike Cooper.) His films have screened at MoMA Doc Fortnight, TIFF, Hot Docs, the Philadelphia ICA, and the Criterion Channel, among other venues. He has also written about film, literature, art, and music for a variety of publications.
